Canada’s Sponsorship Program is a fundamental part of the country’s immigration system, designed to help Canadian citizens and permanent residents bring their loved ones to Canada. Through this program, sponsors take legal and financial responsibility for the sponsored individual, ensuring they have the necessary support to establish themselves in the country.

Purpose of the Sponsorship Program

 

The sponsorship program aims to promote family reunification, allowing close family members to live together in Canada. It ensures that sponsored individuals receive adequate support, reducing their reliance on public assistance. This program covers different categories of sponsorship, including spousal, parental, and dependent child sponsorships.

 

Types of Sponsorship

1. Spousal and Common-Law Partner Sponsorship

   • Allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse, common-law, or conjugal partner from inside or outside Canada.

   • The sponsor must demonstrate a genuine relationship and commit to financially supporting their partner.

2. Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship (PGP)

   • Enables sponsors to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada as permanent residents.

   • Requires sponsors to meet income requirements to ensure financial stability for the sponsored individuals.

3. Dependent Child Sponsorship

   • Allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their biological or adopted children under the age of 22.

   • Ensures children can live, study, and grow in Canada under their guardian’s care.

4. Other Eligible Relatives (Under Exceptional Cases)

   • In rare cases, Canadian citizens or permanent residents may sponsor orphaned relatives, such as siblings, nephews, or nieces, under specific conditions.
